HOW I TRAVEL ON A BUDGET AS A YACHTIE

Updated: Feb 7, 2023

"So how do you travel so much and not bomb your savings account?" This secret of mine is 4 words. BALLING ON A BUDGET. Yes, if you are close to me you have heard me say this. It is my travel motto. Being in yachting can have such a different work life balance for all yachties in the industry. Depending on what program you work in is how you can manage this yachtie baller budget lifestyle just like I do!

If you choose to be a freelancer in the industry than expect a schedule where you choose when you want to work. This can be rewarding and challenging because you don't have stability with the income you are making but if you're lucky sometimes you luck out making more than you would with a full time gig. Freelancing is sometimes flexible with of your schedule, no contracts so you are a private contractor and not tied down to any longterm commitments. Less labor work and your job come in to do your job and you get paid. Great side hustle if you don’t want to work as a full time yacht crew. Some cons, is weather conditions, not necessarily stable enough income, and not so flexible with your schedule at times.

If you choose to work full time as yacht crew you fall into many pros and cons as well. I personally have found to have a love hate relationship with it. Not every program is the same so finding the perfect program that suits your social life and work life is very important. Usually when your full time all expenses are paid such as accommodation, food, travel expenses (cause your basically living on a yacht). All of these options are open to you as a full time yacht crew you just have to make sure the program is the one for you and this can sometimes take time.

There are many tips and ways you can travel and make money while traveling. I have found to love this yachting life because I benefit from both making an income while traveling which are two things I love. This is what I do to make it in this travel nomad life and it’s really just simply being minimal. Since the main seasons in yachting are basically 8 months out of the year there is gap time when I like to make time to travel, explore more hobbies, do a yoga retreat, go volunteer, work on myself.. whatever it is whenever I have down time and can make time for more things I love which requires money.. these are my

~balling on a budget tips~

1. Make sure your bank account can afford your spontaneous trip idea.

2. Become a minimalist & travel light.

3. Work in hostels or volunteer and exchange programs while traveling.

4. Stay in hostels and or crash with friends from different parts of the world (the more friends you have/ make in every country benefit your long term travels!)

5. Always be active and or work on a side hustle if you can!
